Jimmy Reid Memorial Lecture 2024

The Foundation is delighted that its 2024 annual lecture will be given by Mick Lynch, the General Secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) trade union, on Thursday, 24 October 2024. The lecture will be held in the City Chambers, George Square, Glasgow, at 7:15 pm. Lyn Henderson, Chair of the Jimmy Reid Foundation and PCS will chair the event. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and tea and coffee will be available beforehand with stalls to browse.

Mick Lynch was elected RMT General Secretary in 2021. Before being elected as General Secretary, he was twice elected as RMT Assistant General Secretary and twice served on the RMT’s National Executive. By trade, he is an electrician leaving school at 16 in 1978 to serve his apprenticeship and worked in engineering and construction before joining British Rail, maintaining the train fleet at Eurostar, having been blacklisted out of the construction industry for trade union activity.
He founded and built the Eurostar branch into one of the biggest in the union and secured several important deals on pay and conditions. In December 2023, The New Statesman described him as having “made industrial action cool,” naming him the UK’s nineteenth most powerful left-wing figure of the year. This recent Guardian comment column illustrates why.
