‘UCS work-in: reflections on language and leaders’ virtual meeting, 7pm Thurs 16 June

Both language and leaders are critical to understanding the ‘how’ and ‘why’ some campaigns become mass, popular and successful campaigns while others do not. Here, Professor Gregor Gall will use the work of Professor Chik Collins to look back at the deliberate use of the discourse of the ‘moral economy’ to counter that of the Tories and their neo-liberal ‘lame duck’ industries narrative as well as to mobilise popular support. Meanwhile, Professor Jim Phillips will look at the role of ‘the other Jimmy’, Jimmy Airlie, and Brenda Carson, GMB and STUC senior union activist, will look at the role of her, father, Sammy Barr. Airlie and Barr were the other key leaders of the work-in alongside Jimmy Reid.
